I invite the viewer in with the work’s beauty. There is, however, a darkness underneath the surface. ‘Semper Augustus’ was a tulip breed that was at the forefront of Tulip Mania in the 17th century. What made the flowers so desirable was the deep crimson splits in the petals, which were caused by a virus that weakened the bulb, eventually leading to its own extinction. It makes me think of desirability, fleetingness, and the possibility of disappearing entirely.
